Abstract

Mental health problems among children and adolescents are an area of public health needing increased attention. Children and adolescents whose mental health problems go untreated are at increased risk of suicide, juvenile delinquency, school dropout, and substance abuse. Primary care physicians are often the first point of contact for these youth and left with the task of identifying the most appropriate treatment intervention for these youth and their families. We aim to provide an overview of dialectical behavioral therapy, its effectiveness with adolescents, and its application to work with adolescents.
